A public official liability policy (or a POL) was created for municipalities to purchase to cover all their public officials. It works very much like an errors & omissions policy or a directors & officers policy.
A POL insures against any wrongful conduct which comes out of the public official’s administration of duties. This coverage is generally accompanied by law enforcement, general, and auto liability protection.
POL’s are usually issued on a “claims-made” basis and include the same features as a claims-made policy. Employees are usually also protected under the policy, but not volunteers.
